RESUMO

Oxalic acid and oxalates are secondary metabolites secreted to the surrounding environment by fungi, bacteria, and plants. Oxalates are linked to a variety of processes in soil, e.g. nutrient availability, weathering of minerals, or precipitation of metal oxalates. Oxalates are also mentioned among low-molecular weight compounds involved indirectly in the degradation of the lignocellulose complex by fungi, which are considered to be the most effective degraders of wood. The active regulation of the oxalic acid concentration is linked with enzymatic activities; hence, the biochemistry of microbial biosynthesis and degradation of oxalic acid has also been presented. The potential of microorganisms for oxalotrophy and the ability of microbial enzymes to degrade oxalates are important factors that can be used in the prevention of kidney stone, as a diagnostic tool for determination of oxalic acid content, as an antifungal factor against plant pathogenic fungi, or even in efforts to improve the quality of edible plants. The potential role of fungi and their interaction with bacteria in the oxalate-carbonate pathway are regarded as an effective way for the transfer of atmospheric carbon dioxide into calcium carbonate as a carbon reservoir.

Amaranthus spp. is a nephrotoxic plant with unknown toxic principle, affecting production animals worldwide, mainly in South America. The aim of this paper is to describe 5 spontaneous outbreaks of A. hybridus intoxication in beef cattle, where 7 autopsies were performed. Main gross findings were pale diffuse and enlarged kidneys. Microscopically, kidneys were characterized by severe tubular acute to subacute nephrosis, with dilatated tubules showing different degrees of epithelial degeneration and necrosis, and containing intraluminal eosinophilic hyaline casts. Intratubular birefringent crystals, compatible with oxalate, were observed under polarized light in kidneys from 3 autopsies. Positive von Kossa and red alizarin S staining confirmed the intratubular crystals as calcium deposits. This intoxication occurs mainly in stubble paddocks during summer and early autumn. The data from the present study suggests that oxalates were related to nephrotoxicity due to Amaranthus consumption.

Single crystals of three novel transition-metal oxalates, dirubidium di-aqua-dioxalatocobalt(II) dihydrate or dirubidium cobalt(II) bis-(oxalate) tetra-hydrate, Rb2[Co(C2O4)2(H2O)2]·2H2O, (I), catena-poly[dirubidium [[di-chlorido-cobalt(II)]-µ-oxalato]] or dirubidium cobalt(II) dichloride oxalate, {Rb2[CoCl2(C2O4)]} n , (II), and poly[dipotassium [tri-µ-oxalato-copper(II)dilithium] dihydrate] or dipotassium dilithium copper(II) tris-(oxalate) dihydrate, {K2[Li2Cu(C2O4)3]·2H2O} n , (III), have been grown under hydro-thermal conditions and their crystal structures determined using single-crystal X-ray diffraction. The structure of (I) exhibits isolated octa-hedral [Co(C2O4)2(H2O)2] units, whereas (II) consists of trans chains of Co2+ ions bridged by bidentate oxalato ligands and (III) displays a novel tri-periodic network of Li+ and Cu2+ ions linked by oxalato bridging ligands.

La enfermedad de cálculos renales, (nefrolitiasis) es un problema común en la atención en salud. Entre algunos de los factores que ayudan a la prevalencia de litiasis se encuentra la obesidad, altas temperaturas ambientales, y los climas secos. La frecuencia de las diferentes composiciones de los cálculos es: Oxalato de calcio entre el 70-80 %, fosfato calcico el 15 % (la apatita es más común y la brushita es menos común), Ácido úrico el 8%, cistina entre el 1-2 %, Estruvita -1%, Varios - <1 %3.No existen muchos datos sobre la recurrencia de los mismos, pero se sabe que la tasa de recurrencia de litiasis urinaria es del 10 al 30% a los 5 años en pacientes que tienen cálculos de oxalato de calcio idiopáticos. Se plantea elaborar un protocolo de manejo metabólico multidisciplinario de la litiasis urinaria en base a la bibliografía actual tomando en cuanto los puntos de vistas de las especialidades destinadas al manejo del paciente con litiasis urinaria. Nuestro objetivo es establecer un protocolo de manejo capaz de identificar y establecer una terapia que pueda prevenir los cálculos urinarios de forma eficiente y económica, mejorando el pronóstico y minimizando las complicaciones.


Kidney stone disease is a common problem in health care. Among the factors that contribute to the prevalence of lithiasis are obesity, high environmental temperatures, and dry climates. The frequency of the different stone compositions is: Calcium Oxalate 70-80%, Calcium Phosphate -15% (Apatite is more common and Brushite is less common), Uric Acid 8%, Cystine - 1-2%, Struvite -1%, Various - <1%3. There are not many data on their recurrence, but it is known that the recurrence rate of urinary lithiasis is 10 to 30% at 5 years in patients with idiopathic calcium oxalate stones. It is proposed to develop a multidisciplinary metabolic management protocol for urinary lithiasis based on the current bibliography, taking the point of specialties dedicated to the management of patients with urinary lithiasis. Our goal is to establish a management protocol capable of identifying and establishing a therapy that can efficiently and economically prevent urinary stones, improving prognosis and minimizing complications.

Acute kidney injury (AKI) caused by oxalate nephropathy is one of the reasons which is easy to be ignored in clinic. The paper reported two cases of secondary oxalate nephropathy complicated by AKI confirmed by renal biopsy, and renal function recovered in patients with active treatment. The literatures on oxalate nephropathy were reviewed to improve clinicians' understanding of oxalate nephropathy.

This work explores the benefits of single-phase oxalate precursors for the preparation of spinel ferrites by thermal decomposition. A direct comparison between the genuine oxalate solid solution and the physical mixture of simple oxalates is presented using the case study of cobalt ferrite preparation. The mixing of metal cations within a single oxalate structure could be verified prior to its thermal decomposition by several non-destructive experimental techniques, namely Mössbauer spectroscopy, X-ray powder diffraction (XRD) and energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy. In situ XRD experiments were conducted to compare the decomposition processes of the solid solution and the physical mixture. Additionally, the decomposition products of the FeCo oxalate solid solution were studied ex situ by means of N2 adsorption, Mössbauer spectroscopy and XRD. The results obtained for different reaction temperatures demonstrate the possibilities to easily control the physical properties of the prepared oxides.

Colocasia esculenta(L) or taro is a tropical crop largely produced for its tubers (corms) while leaves and stems remain underutilized and untapped by-products with promising potential applications.Colocasialeaves are low in calories, rich in proteins, dietary fiber, and micronutrients. However, its utilization as food remains limited owing to the lack of awareness vis-à-vis its nutritional profile and the presence of antinutrients such as tannins, phytates and oxalates. The antinutritional factors can be overcome by cooking and varied processing techniques thereby unveiling the nutritional benefits. The high content of bioactive compounds and antioxidative potential of colocasia leaves renders several health benefits such as anticancer, antidiabetic, anti-inflammatory activity. The paper reviews the available literature on the nutritional, antinutritional, phytochemical profile of taro leaves and the advanced analytical techniques for their identification and quantification. Further, its health benefits and food applications have been discussed.

Transition metal oxalates have attracted wide attention due to the characteristics of the conversion reaction as anode materials in lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) and sodium-ion batteries (SIBs), However, there are huge volume expansion and sluggish circulation dynamics during the reversible Li+ and Na+ insertion/extraction process, which would lead to unsatisfactory reversible capacity and stability. In order to solve these problems, a rod-like structure Ni0.5Co0.5C2O4·2H2O is in-situ formed on the reduced graphene oxide layer (Ni0.5Co0.5C2O4·2H2O/rGO) in a glycol-water mixture medium via an interface induced engineering strategy. Benefitting from the synergistic cooperation of nano-diameter rod-like structure and high conductive rGO networks, the experimental results show that the prepared Ni0.5Co0.5C2O4·2H2O/rGO electrode has predominant rate performance and ultra-long cycle stability. For the LIBs, it not only exhibits an ultrahigh reversible capacity (1179.9 mA h g-1 at 0.5 A g-1 after 300 cycles), but also presents outstanding rate and cycling performance (646.5 mA h g-1 at 5 A g-1 after 1200 cycles). Besides, the Ni0.5Co0.5C2O4·2H2O/rGO electrode displays remarkable sodium storage capacity of 221.6 mA h g-1 after 100 cycles at 0.5 A g-1. Further, the extraordinary electrochemical capability of Ni0.5Co0.5C2O4·2H2O/rGO active material is also reflected in two full-cells, assembled using commercial LiCoO2 as cathode for LIBs and commercial Na3V2(PO4)3 as cathode for SIBs, both of which can show wonderful specific capacity and cycling stability. It is found in in-situ Raman experiments that the reversible changes of oxalate peaks are monitored in a charge/discharge process, which is scientific evidence for the transform reaction mechanism of metal oxalates in LIBs. These findings not only provide important ideas for studying the charge/discharge storage mechanism but also give scientific basis for the design of high-performance electrode materials.

Fungi are one of the main agents of stone biodeterioration worldwide, since they strongly interfere with its integrity, aesthetical and structural natural properties. During an experimental survey aimed to isolate fungal species contributing to the biodeterioration of the limestone walls of the Old Cathedral of Coimbra (Portuguese unesco World Heritage site), a Talaromyces species that could not be identified to any currently known species in this genus was isolated. Molecular phylogenetic analysis of the internal transcribed spacer, ß-tubulin and RNA polymerase II subunit 2, placed this fungus in Talaromyces sect. Purpurei, while also pointing at its phylogenetic distinction from the remaining species in this section. Thus, a novel species, Talaromyces saxoxalicus sp. nov., is here proposed. Moreover, considering the isolation source of this fungus and in an attempt to understand its contribution to the overall stone monument biodeterioration, the species's in vitro biodeteriorative potential was also evaluated. The results highlighted that the species exhibited an in vitro biodeteriorative ability (calcium oxalate crystal formation), highlighting its potential deteriorative profile.

Oxidative stress, a well-known cause of stress-induced premature senescence (SIPS), is increased in patients with calcium oxalate (CaOx) kidney stones (KS). Oxalate and calcium oxalate monohydrate (COM) induce oxidative stress in renal tubular cells, but to our knowledge, their effect on SIPS has not yet been examined. Here, we examined whether oxalate, COM, or urine from patients with CaOx KS could induce SIPS and telomere shortening in human kidney (HK)-2 cells, a proximal tubular renal cell line. Urine from age- and sex-matched individuals without stones was used as a control. In sublethal amounts, H2O2, oxalate, COM, and urine from those with KS evoked oxidative stress in HK-2 cells, indicated by increased protein carbonyl content and decreased total antioxidant capacity, but urine from those without stones did not. The proportion of senescent HK-2 cells, as indicated by SA-ßgal staining, increased after treatment with H2O2, oxalate, COM, and urine from those with KS. Expression of p16 was higher in HK-2 cells treated with H2O2, oxalate, COM, and urine from those with KS than it was in cells treated with urine from those without stones and untreated controls. p16 was upregulated in the SA-ßgal positive cells. Relative telomere length was shorter in HK-2 cells treated with H2O2, oxalate, COM, and urine from those with KS than that in cells treated with urine from those without stones and untreated controls. Transcript expression of shelterin components (TRF1, TRF2 and POT1) was decreased in HK-2 cells treated with H2O2, oxalate, COM, and urine from those with KS, in which case the expression was highest. Urine from those without KS did not significantly alter TRF1, TRF2, and POT1 mRNA expression in HK-2 cells relative to untreated controls. In conclusion, oxalate, COM, and urine from patients with CaOx KS induced SIPS and telomere shortening in renal tubular cells. SIPS induced by a lithogenic milieu may result from upregulation of p16 and downregulation of shelterin components, specifically POT1, and might contribute, at least in part, to the development of CaOx KS.

One of the potential implementation of mesoporous silica nanomaterials (MSNs) is their use in biomedical applications as adsorbents or carriers of various bioactive substances. In this study, we attempted to fabricate silica nanomaterials containing copper and silver that were introduced into the MSN matrix, for the first time using oxalate compounds as a metal source. The syntheses were carried out using hydrothermal and impregnation methods. Structure studies revealed that the obtained nanoparticles were of a spheroidal shape and most had diameters in the range 200-500 nm. Silver and copper were found to be grouped into clusters in most samples, except in copper-decorated MSNs prepared with the impregnation method, which had an even distribution of metal atoms throughout the volume of the granule. An evaluation of the cytotoxic and irritating effects revealed that the preferred candidates for potential future applications in medicine or cosmetology among materials obtained with the presented method are the copper-conjugated MSNs.

Limiting gastrointestinal oxalate absorption is a promising approach to reduce urinary oxalate excretion in patients with idiopathic and enteric hyperoxaluria. Phosphate binders, that inhibit gastrointestinal absorption of dietary phosphate by the formation of easily excretable insoluble complexes, are commonly used as a treatment for hyperphosphatemia in patients with end-stage renal disease. Several of these commercially available phosphate binders also have affinity for oxalate. In this work, a series of metallic cations (Li+, Na+, Mg2+, Ca2+, Fe2+, Cu2+, Zn2+, Al3+, Fe3+ and La3+) is investigated on their binding affinity to phosphate and oxalate on one side and anionic species that could be used to administer the cationic species to the body on the other, e.g., acetate, carbonate, chloride, citrate, formate, hydroxide and sulphate. Through quantum chemical calculations, the aim is to understand the competition between the different complexes and propose possible new and more efficient phosphate and oxalate binders.

Pumpkin leaves (Cucurbita moschata) were subjected to different household cooking methods (boiling, microwaving, steaming, and stir-frying) to evaluate their effect on antinutrients, phenolic compounds, antioxidant properties (ABTS, and DPPH) and in vitro α-glucosidase activity. All cooking methods studied significantly reduced the antinutrients and antioxidant activities, whilst phenolic compounds p-coumaric and ferulic acids significantly increased. The cooking methods reduced the oxalates by more than 50%, tannins by 47% and phytates by 79.22%. Steaming and boiling resulted in highest concentrations of p-coumaric (195.40 mg kg-1) and ferulic acids (103.90 mg kg-1) compared to other methods. Overall, boiled leaves retained the highest total phenolic compounds, whilst steamed leaves retained the highest antioxidant capacity. Raw pumpkin leaf extracts showed higher in vitro α-glucosidase inhibitory effects than the cooked leaves. Thus, cooking affected the inhibitory effect of in vitro α-glucosidase activity. Natural products have always enjoyed great popularity among consumers. Wild tea is an interesting alternative to tea from intensive plantations. The term "wild tea" is applied to many different varieties of tea, the most desirable and valued of which are native or indigenous tea plants. Special pro-health properties of wild tea are attributed to the natural conditions in which it grows. However, there are no complex studies that describe quality and health indicators of wild tea. The aim of this research was to evaluate the quality of wild and cultivated green tea from different regions of China: Wuzhishan, Baisha, Kunlushan, and Pu'Er. The assessment was carried out by verifying the concentration of selected chemical components in tea and relating it to the health risks they may pose, as well as to the nutritional requirements of adults. Wild tea was characterized by higher micronutrient concentration. The analyzed teas can constitute a valuable source of Mn in the diet. A higher concentration of nitrates and oxalates in cultivated tea can be associated with fertilizer use. The analyzed cultivated tea was a better source of antioxidants with a higher concentration of caffeine. There were no indications of health risks for wild or cultivated teas.

Birefringent materials play a key role in modulating the polarization of light and thus in optical communication as well as in laser techniques and science. Designing new, excellent birefringent materials remains a challenge. In this work, we designed and synthesized the first antimony(III) fluoride oxalate birefringent material, KSb2 C2 O4 F5 , by a combination of delocalized π-conjugated [C2 O4 ]2- groups, stereochemical active Sb3+ cations, and the most electronegative element, fluorine. The [C2 O4 ]2- groups are not in an optimal arrangement in the crystal structure of KSb2 C2 O4 F5 ; nonetheless, KSb2 C2 O4 F5 exhibits a large birefringence (Δn=0.170 at 546 nm) that is even better than that of the well-known commercial birefringent material α-BaB2 O4 , even though the latter features an optimal arrangement of π-conjugated [B3 O6 ]3- groups. Based on first-principles calculations, this prominent birefringence should be attributed to the alliance of planar π-conjugated [C2 O4 ]2- anions, highly distorted SbO2 F2 and SbOF3 polyhedra with a stereochemically active lone pair. The combination of lone-pair electrons and π-conjugated systems boosts the birefringence to a large extent and will help the development of high-performance birefringent materials.

Whether exposed by grazing toxic range or pasture plants or by eating contaminated feed, there are plant toxins that produce urinary tract disease, gastroenteritis, and other miscellaneous or multisystemic diseases. Diagnosis can be challenging and requires incorporation of field studies, clinical signs, gross and microscopic pathology, and chemical identification of plants, toxins, and metabolites in animal samples. The objectives of this review are to introduce poisonous plants that commonly poison livestock in North America; describe clinical and pathologic lesions they produce in livestock; and present current technology available to identify poisoning, treat affected animals, and minimize or avoid poisoning additional animals.

Plant-based diets are associated with reduced risk of lifestyle-induced chronic diseases. The thousands of phytochemicals they contain are implicated in cellular-based mechanisms to promote antioxidant defense and reduce inflammation. While recommendations encourage the intake of fruits and vegetables, most people fall short of their target daily intake. Despite the need to increase plant-food consumption, there have been some concerns raised about whether they are beneficial because of the various 'anti-nutrient' compounds they contain. Some of these anti-nutrients that have been called into question included lectins, oxalates, goitrogens, phytoestrogens, phytates, and tannins. As a result, there may be select individuals with specific health conditions who elect to decrease their plant food intake despite potential benefits. The purpose of this narrative review is to examine the science of these 'anti-nutrients' and weigh the evidence of whether these compounds pose an actual health threat.

OBJECTIVES: To compare the effects of a stannous fluoride dentifrice and a sodium fluoride dentifrice on dentinal hypersensitivity when used with an oxalate-based regimen combining in-office and at-home treatment. MATERIALS AND METHODS: In this single-center, randomized, controlled, double-blind, pilot clinical trial, 30 subjects were professionally treated at baseline with a 3% oxalate/potassium salt solution on up to two target teeth, then randomized 1:1 to either 0.454% stannous fluoride or 0.243% sodium fluoride overlabeled dentifrice. Both groups were given 6 sensitivity strips (3.14% potassium oxalate gel) and a soft, manual toothbrush. Subjects were permitted to apply strips on up to two teeth, up to three times per tooth, at home as desired throughout the study. Dentinal sensitivity (cold air blast challenge) was assessed at baseline, immediately after post-professional treatment, and at day 60 using the Schiff scale and a Visual Analog Scale (VAS). RESULTS: Immediately after professional oxalate treatment, the overall mean Schiff and VAS score decreased 25.6% and 22.4% from baseline, respectively (p ≤ 0.001 for both). At day 60, further reductions in both mean scores were seen in both groups. There were no significant differences between the groups at day 60. All treatments were well tolerated. CONCLUSIONS: In subjects treated with oxalates for dentinal hypersensitivity, both stannous fluoride and sodium fluoride dentifrices are well tolerated, are feasible for routine use, and do not detract from the desensitizing effects of an in-office and at-home oxalate combination treatment regimen. CLINICAL RELEVANCE: Either stannous fluoride or sodium fluoride dentifrices can be recommended to dentinal hypersensitivity patients who undergo professional oxalate treatment.

RESUMO

Increased level of oxalates in urine and plasma can be attributed to endogenous overproduction, increased ingestion or excessive intestinal absorption. When a supersaturation status is reached, oxalates combine with calcium and crystallize to form 80% of the urinary stones. Several cardiovascular diseases such as coronary heart disease and stroke are thought to be associated with the formation of urinary stones via sharing the same pathogenesis and/or risk factors. This review investigated the evidence linking oxalates/urinary stones to cardiovascular diseases. Eventually, two theories can explain the possible association between urinary stones and cardiovascular diseases: the theory of common origin and the theory of common risk factors. While the first theory is based on the common vascular pathophysiology of urinary stones and cardiac events, the later suggests that metabolic syndrome traits increase the risk of urinary stones and cardiovascular diseases independently. A few cohort studies showed a higher risk of coronary heart disease and stroke among people with history of urinary stones than people without it while other cohort studies did not. These studies had different definitions for cardiovascular diseases, used various methods to assess urinary stones, and some of them did not control for potential confounders. When they were pooled together in meta-analyses, a significant heterogeneity across studies was observed. In conclusion, although there is some evidence indicating that urinary stones could increase the risk of cardiovascular diseases, a substantial causal relationship cannot be settled.
